- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Cornmeal (for dusting)
- Butter (for brushing, optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and combine until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes to double in size.
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal.
- Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Make a few slashes on top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Optionally, brush with melted butter after baking.
- Let cool before slicing.
Notes
For best results, measure flour correctly and allow sufficient rising time for optimal flavor and texture.
