A simple and delightful recipe for crusty French bread with a soft, chewy center

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Cornmeal (for dusting)
  • Butter (for brushing, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and combine until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes to double in size.
  6. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal.
  8. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Make a few slashes on top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Optionally, brush with melted butter after baking.
  12. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

For best results, measure flour correctly and allow sufficient rising time for optimal flavor and texture.
