Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup lukewarm milk
  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup raisins or nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the lukewarm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix in the sourdough starter, egg, and softened butter.
  3. Gradually add in the flour, salt, and cinnamon to form a dough. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread softened butter, then sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on top. Add raisins or nuts if desired.
  6. Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 1-2 inch pieces.
  7. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another hour.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious sourdough cinnamon rolls!

Notes

For a richer flavor, feed your starter a few hours before beginning. Ensure to use lukewarm milk for best results.
