This activity is perfect for warm days, birthday parties, or just a messy backyard adventure that brings STEM learning to life.

Why Rainbow Bubble Snakes Are So Much Fun

A Science Experiment in Disguise

When kids blow into the bottle, air pushes the soapy solution through the fabric to create continuous streams of bubbles. This demonstrates airflow and pressure in a super fun and visual way. Adding food coloring teaches about mixing colors and layering.

It’s science, but with extra sparkle!

Sensory-Rich and Active

Rainbow bubble snakes are perfect for sensory seekers. Kids feel the squishy bottle, see the swirling colors, hear the bubbling foam, and blow with all their might to make the bubbles grow. It encourages movement, exploration, and plenty of giggles!

Directions

  1. Prepare your bottle
Cut the bottom off a clean plastic water bottle using scissors. Make sure the edges aren’t sharp.
  2. Attach the fabric
Stretch a sock or piece of cloth over the open bottom of the bottle. Secure it tightly with a rubber band or duct tape.
  3. Add the magic colors
Drop food coloring onto the fabric-covered end. Try red, blue, and yellow in different spots to create layered rainbows.
  4. Mix the bubble solution
In a bowl, mix a few squirts of dish soap with about ½ cup of water.
  5. Dip and blow
Dip the cloth end of the bottle into the bubble mixture, then blow through the bottle’s mouthpiece (don’t suck in!). Watch long, colorful bubble snakes come to life.
  6. Keep it going
Re-dip and blow again and again to keep the rainbow snakes going!

Tips for Maximum Fun and Safety

Make It a Game

  • See who can blow the longest bubble snake
  • Create a rainbow race on the sidewalk
  • Try using different shaped bottles or sock textures for varied results

Safety Note

Be sure kids blow out through the bottle not in! Remind them not to suck in air while blowing to avoid tasting soapy water. Always supervise younger children closely.
